There have been many people that have walked from their existing contracts
when their contract has come to an end.

Whilst many on this newsgroup do so because theyre pretty shrewd at buying
contracts with cashback deals and know where to go thanks to people like
Reestit Mutton, many people dont seem to be aware of how much bargaining
power they have when completing a standard contract especially if you when
looking at your spend history you have quite a high spending monthly amount.

For example, if you go for a phone contract via Dialaphone etc, that company
gets paid a huge commision for connecting you. At the end of one year, the
network provider does NOT want you to terminate the contract and go back to
Dialaphone and get a new contract so they will more than match any offer you
get from Dialaphone.

When you come to the end of your contract, you hold all the cards in your
hand - there are no ties - nothing. Therefore you have nothing to lose if
you walk. Therefore negotiate a better contract.

Examples of contracts recently negotiated:

- When leaving Singlepoint, Singlepoint offered a free Nokia 3510i + either
an offpeak 750 + 50 text or anytime 200 on Vodafone (this is without even
asking).

- When leaving Vodafone on an evening and weekend offpeak contract, as they
did not do offpeak x-net, Vodafone offered an offpeak 300 x-net + 250 text
for Ł15/month.

- When leaving Orange on an anytime anynetwork 200 contract saying that 3
gave a better deal to match it, Orange immediately matched the offer giving
750 minutes anytime any-network for Ł35/month.

Bottom line is that if you have a good call history especially if you spend
a lot above what you pay on your monthly tariff, you have a lot of room for
negotiation especially during times of the year when its not good for the
mobile industry (i.e. just after New Years) or if a competing network has an
especially fantastic offer.

If you cant negotiate anything better than standard deals through normal
sales channels, then walk. Most of the time, youll get a better offer.

True - why not send this to the bbc (bill thompson watchdog) or something
(as we already know).

I would say the general press but the amount of money they get from adverts
for mobile phones they would never publish these facts.

Nice one though.

Your network or SP upgrades dept should always be your first place to ask
at the end of your contract.
If you dont have any luck with them, then check out the new deals on RMs site.

NoSpam@SpamFreeWorld.com had a brainwave and did spout the following:

The commission depends entirely on the tariff connected. Sometimes its
not very much at all, and dont forget that if youre having a free
phone then the vast majority of that commission is really paying for
your handset.

Not always, it depends on the operators policies and your spend history.
If you went an a Ł15/month tariff and didnt go over your minutes and
therefore only spent Ł15.month then they would be happy to lose you as a
customer.

Thats quite standard, a 3510i can be purchased for around Ł50 by the
networks, leaving plenty of room to give it away on upgrade and still
make profit.

Probably indicates you are on the wrong tariff.

January is almost as busy as December - clearly you dont work in the
industry.

Jon, I have a feeling that you exist here just to be disagreeable.

In case it wasnt clear, I followed up with a post saying that the contract
was free too.
If on the off chance you still believe its common place, please send us a
link of where you can get a free Nokia 3510i plus free contract on or
offpeak.

> Probably indicates you are on the wrong tariff.
Probably does, but the point was that the new contract negotiated was
extremely beneficial and if you were to ask for it, youd be charged closer
to Ł20 / month.

> January is almost as busy as December - clearly you dont work in the

All industries need to hit their sales targets. Many people buy phones and
contracts for Xmas. The reason why January and February sell almost as well
are because newer phones drop in price so that they come on contract with
less excess to pay. I believe it is you who doesnt know your industry if
you would challange me on contracts being better in December than January.

Finally, I posted this because someone posted that theyd been with Orange
for several years going through several phones and averaged a Ł90/month
bill. He didnt make anywhere near enough of an effort to get a better deal
given his call history.

Jon, I dont want to get into a slanging match with you but I would
appreciate it if you didnt go out of your way to be so disagreeable. There
is probably a lot of good advice unposted because of your aggressive stance
and its not like any of my advice is incorrect or invalid. There is a great
deal of fantastic advice out there comparing whats advertised, but there is
little in the way of what can be negotiated. I like to think that there are
readers out there that appreciated my post.
