Since you cant use a service like Telediscount, your best bet will be to
buy one of the many phonecards available from virtually any newsagent. Most,
if not all, have 0800 numbers.

For example, the Post office sell a phone card that is accessed using a 0800
number and charges 5p per min to US landlines and mobile. Call quality is
also generally very good.

Im not sure I know (or perhaps you dont know!) what you mean. You
are obviously going to have to pay for these calls in some way!

I think you might not understand that there are two main ways of
making a call to the US (other than direct with BT):

1) Using an 0800 number (or a 4 digit code) to connect to a service
provider with whom you open an account and to whom you make payments
for the service. You then dial the US number.

2) Using a premium rated number for which the service provider gets
paid by BT i.e. you pay BT for the 0870 or 0845 (or whatever) call on
your BT bill and BT pays a proportion of that to the service provider.
You pay the service provider nothing. You simply call the service
provider and then you dial the US number as in 1) above.

Unless you are making a lot of very short calls (i.e. very abnormal
usage) or you want to call during the day then it is usually far less
expensive to use an 0845, 0870 or 0844 number. www.telediscount.co.uk
are generally the cheapest for calls to the US in the evening. They
quote an 0844 number (2p/min) for calls at all times but they dont
say that in the evening (after 6pm) you can also use their 0845 2 445
445 number (1p/min from a BT landline).

So in summary:

Weekdays before 6pm use (0844) 4620620 (2p/min)

Weekdays after 6pm and weekends use (0845) 2445445 (1p/min)

Dont use phone cards unless you dont have access to a BT landline.
They are usually rip offs.

If youre sure an 0845 callthrough isnt possible ?
Sign up for a Calling Card like Tiscali, Quip, Onetel, etc.

I use Tiscali
http://www.tiscali.co.uk/services/smarttalk/daytime extra.html

USA 3p per min anytime dialing from a 0800 number

You can pay Tiscali prepay by credit card or postpay by Direct Debit
I would recommend postpay by DD

If you join Tiscali ?
Please give them my number for their recommend a friend 5 quid bonus

Tiscali account number US6CB4G440
Sign up code MGM01

I would call registrations on 0800 954 2223 rather than sign up online
Once youve joined them, email me for a current 0800 access number

You can also use Tiscali from an Orange phone on a Talkplan that incs 0800

Thanks

As already mentioned there are plenty of companies who will get you cheap
rates to call the US. Superline.co.uk is an 0800 call through and is 2.5p
at all times to both US landlines and mobiles (some CCs have a surcharge
for calling foreign mobiles over landlines). They also have an excellent
online billing system that will list any calls you have made usually within
minutes of making them.

Not to the US, callers to their landlines and mobiles are charged the same,
they even use the same exchange numbers.

Anyone who surcharges for US mobiles is a) likely to be wrong and b) a fraud as
these are the same rate as US landlines for the caller (wholesale and retail).

I use Telco CPS (2p) but can also thoroughly recommend Superline
(2.5p) (email me with a/c number to get Ł5 credit). Of course, if you
dont want to actually open an account, Telediscount as previously
mentioned are also an option.

Steve... thanks! you have the deal i want. also, the website doesnt give
the rate for calling a USA mobile (only gives for USA landline). or is this
the same rate?

also, do i have to sign up using my home BT number? I dont really wanna do
this as i live with 3 other house mates and dont want them using my
telediscount service.

cheers
Andy
