XDAIIs comes with turn on flight mode option.

Although the GSM part of the PDA will be turned off, some a member of flight
staff mistakenly think I was using it instead of just the PDA part?

Methinks the best thing to do is to remove the SIM card altogether.

How would that help since theoretically youd still be capable of making
an emergency call and hence causing the problem (whatever it is)
thats caused by GSM phones in planes.

BA have recently started to accept that Blackberries and the like can be
used in the air as long as theyre switched to flight mode (from memory
its even in their inflight magazine). Id still not want to waste my
time arguing the toss with the cabin staff though.

I dont think Id get chance to argue with cabin staff...they probably
arrest on site currently.

As do previous versions.

The standard announcement on my recent flight to Portugal
specifically stated that flight mode was not allowed. Simple, its
not allowed and for a few hours its not worth being arrested for
ignoring the flight crews instructions.

Just dont use it.

Having said that, mobile phones do not cause interference with the
planes electronics - according to the FAA studies. The primary
problem is that they are visible to 1,000s of ground-based cells and
cause problems for the ground-side cell network. It was, AIUI, the
ground-side problems which caused them to be banned (by the FCC?) from
planes and the FAA/CAA/etc. simply went along with the ban.

Indeed, mobile phones will be allowed to be used in planes in a few
years - as long as the plane is fitted with a pico-cell to receive
all calls from on-board phones, rather than causing problems for
ground-side cells. However, this is not cheap for the airlines to fit
and passengers, will pay the bills one way or the other.

On the other hand, does anyone really want the idiot in the seat
next to you on a 10 hour flight shouting down their phone for most of
it? :(

I dont believe the interference problems caused to the cellular
networks on the ground are of any interest at all to the airlines.

The reason theyre banned? My guess is Safety; we cant prove theyre
safe so you shouldnt use them... Im sure insurance indemnity comes
into it somewhere. (Yes I know you cant really prove anything is safe
only a lack of evidence that its dangerous)

Another, more serious reason for the ban is the interference Im told
they cause to the flight decks comms. When the mobiles RACH into the
networks the TDMA buzz is irritating, Im not sure whether this
interference is from the passengers or the flight crews phones though
and I find it hard to believe that even the phones in the first couple
of rows could interfere with headset audio about 5m away; poor
screening.

Again, the airlines dont care about the problems they could cause for
cellular networks. They would care about the loss of revenues from
Skyphone so no doubt theyll find some way to tarrif this.

Then read the statements that the FCC and the FAA (albeit
USA-centric) have been making recently.

The pico-cell would be operated by the airline so, yes, they would
charge for it.

Whereas on a flight to Spain two weeks ago the announcement specifically
allowed electronic devices such as laptops and PDAs as long as they
were in flight mode and the seat belt sign wasnt illuminated. This was
with FlyBe.

However that was my most recently flight and the only one to mention
flight mode. On other flights I have used a laptop, PDA and
smartphone - all have wireless - and not been asked to switch them off.
If I were asked I would not argue and would simply switch them off.

Care to post a link?

I dont deny that there would be a (limited) problem for the ground
networks but thats never been the reason given out by the flight crew
on any of the flights Ive taken.
