Warning: When you travel abroad and roam between networks, it is
commonplace for European network operators to send you an SMS message
welcoming you to their network. If you are with Singlepoint, they
will charge you 20p for every one of these messages.

I got back from a snowboarding trip in the alps, and my phone bill was
massive. So I phoned singlepoint to find out the details.

It turns out a large portion of the costs are because I travelled
their by train and spent every day going up and down mountains.
Therefore I kept roaming between networks - everytime this happened I
got sent a welcome message which I subsequently got billed for.

When I spoke to Singlepoint customer services about this, they didnt
consider it to be a problem, and would not offer me a refund for these
messages.

I dont appreciate being sent marketing SMS messages to my mobile at
the best of times. When I get billed for these messages on top!! Now
that is simply taking the piss.

Has anybody else experienced this kind problem with other network
operators? My contract is up next month, and Im thinking about
switching straight to vodafone so I can use their online billing
service (something Singlepoint do not have).

I was with Singlepoint. They insisted that their pricing was the same as =

Vodafone - theyre owned by Vodafone and about to be merged in with
Vodafones billing. I got a nasty bill for GPRS roaming - they charge a
minimum of 98p for every connection, which came to about Ł50. Mostly
because GPRS roaming didnt connect very reliably. Someone on this
newsgroup said that Vodafones website includes this charge. I havent
been able to find it. And it changed while I was with them, but I didnt =

see any warning. As you say, they didnt seem to think these kinds of
charges were a problem. Ive since moved to Orange. The network isnt as =

reliable, but the roaming bills are vastly lower.

From looking though my bill, it appears that the offending number is:

+447785016005

This number appeared everytime I received a welcome message due to
roaming between networks, and I got charged 30p every time. The first
one appeared litterally as soon as the Eurostar train I was travelling
through came out of the tunnel in Calais.

A Google search reveals that this is a vodafone service centre number.
If you see this number on your bill after travelling abroad, the
chance are you are being ripped off, just like I was.

I think I will prob switch to Orange also - my folks and my girlfriend
are all on Orange so I will save on call costs. Plus Orange has a
much better answerphone service - the Vodafone one sucks big time!!

It is my understanding that Orange and Virgin dont charge for
incoming text messages when roaming - at least Im not aware of this
ever happening.

A: Because it messes up the order in which people normally read text.
Q: Why is top-posting such a bad thing?
A: Top-posting.
Q: What is the most annoying thing on Usenet and in e-mail?
