BlankMy 11 year old deaf son will be going to boarding school in September.
Does anybody know of a provider that offers a cheap pay as you go tariff
with cheap pricing for text messages.
He will not be able to understand speech.
Thanks for any advise

choose no line rental ever option,

sms are 5p, or 2.5p during the first promotional month.

Vodafone (disclaimer: I work for them) offer the RNID Textphone.
The phone offers Texttalk - where an operator types your side of the
conversation and reads aloud your sons. PAYT prices are Ł0.08 per
minute with the first 45 seconds free.

A quick overview can be found at
http://www.vodafone.co.uk/download/RNIDMobileTextphonePDF.pdf
And the manual is at
http://www.vodafone.co.uk/download/RNID%20Textphone%20Manual.pdf

Theres also the Talk-by-Text price plan

The Talk-by-Text pay monthly price plan has been designed for people
who prefer text messages to speech. Talk-by-Text includes 300 text
messages + 100 WAP minutes every month, and also offers special rates on
Respond Plus, our voicemail to text service. There are no inclusive
voice calls, so you wont be paying for something you dont use.

If you want to talk to a specialist, call
From a Vodafone mobile Phone dial: 33222
From any telephone dial: 08700 733222
By Email:disability.access AT vodafone.co.uk
By Fax for questions about your bill, price plan or contract: 08701 616500
By Fax for questions about Vodafone services or technical enquiries:
01635 689102
By Textphone (Minicom) for questions about your bill, price plan or
contract: 01635 689075
By Textphone (Minicom) for questions about Vodafone services or
technical enquiries: 01635 6 89071

Hope thats of some help

My deaf daughter has used the O2 PAYG service for many years. It comes to
400 texts/month for a tenner (300 free and spend the tenner on the rest).
You may need to arrange for a hearing person to do the regular top-up. O2 is
IME more reliable than Orange for text.

In the longer term you may wish to think about getting a phone/pda that
supports MSN over GPRS. MSN is the lingua franca of the young deaf. Orange
is probably the best PAYG service for this (it works best over full
internet).

One can use eTop-Up now at Woolies and suchlike for phones. And I
think one can even apply credit at a cash machine, so no hearing
person is needed anymore.

Orange just talk is currently coming with send one text, get another
free. Add on to this the 400 texts for Ł12 bundle (3p per message) and
you wont be far off.

The 400 text bundle must be manually re-applied every month, but there
is no minimum top-up.

This is a signing 11 year old. He probably does not have a cash card and
even hearing people have problems communicating with Woolies staff :-)
