I would like a text only phone for my son who is at the age of learning to
read and write.

I wouldnt want him putting it to his head for obvious reasons.

Anyone know of a little SMS device that dont do voice?

Motorola V100
http://search.ebay.co.uk/motorola-v100 W0QQfkrZ1QQfromZR8

It does voice, but only with a headset IIRC.

Why not just get a cheap phone and cut the loudspeaker and
microphone wires out. That should (a) prevent voice calls, and (b)
leave no reason for placing next to head.

You wont be able to make emergency calls, of course.

I believe Vodafone are bringing out just such a unit.

It will have an answerphone, but NOT be able to MAKE/RECEIVE voice calls.

You mean you are worried about RF absorption to his head?

Dont bother, get him a phone with Bluetooth and a Bluetooth headset.
The RF that a Bluetooth headset puts out is minuscule

Youd be better off finding out which network in your area
has the strongest signals.
Stronger the signal, lower the output from the phone.

Also I bet if you made a statistical study, youd find more kids are killed
or maimed in accidents whilst texting by not paying attention,
than have ever died from brain cancer.
