Given that you cant fully clip the phone in place without removing the
bung, I would think very few people would not realise this ;-)
Another thing to try is cleaning the contacts on the base of the phone.
They can get covered in gunge after a while, mine somehow mysteriously got
covered in chocolate once, I cant for the life of me figure out how ;-)
Use a clean slightly moist cloth and give them a good wipe. This can clear
up a lot of intermittent problems.
Also check the connector from the cradle into the control box, assuming
the latter is somewhere where you can get at it (mine is under the
drivers seat). This can also become intermittent so unplug and replug
this a couple of times if cleaning the contacts doesnt help.
