Is it fairly easy to use a mobile as a modem for connecting to an ISP? From
what Ive been able to find out, it looks as though all I need is a suitable
data cable and suitable drivers, and my PC would be able to effectively use
the mobile as a modem for connecting to (for example) PAYG ISPs on land line
numbers. The phone Id be likely to use for this purpose is a Siemens
(probably an A62) - is this possible? I understand that the connection speed
is likely to be slow (14400 or thereabouts), but is it fairly easy to set
up?

The reason for asking is that Ill shortly be moving to France and will
likely be without a land line for some time, but still need Internet
connectivity. Im currently an Orange PAYG phone user - is it relatively
simple to e.g. set up a contract with Orange France, or perhaps to get a
contract with Orange UK and transfer it to France in mid-contract (as I will
initially be without a landline but still in the UK?

Hi
My probable solution your isp search is you get a suscriber that has
got GPRS and then using your fon cable and the appropriate drivers you
can use your cell to browse the net and receive calls too
i used gprs for a while the connection was 192kpbs but when its within
peak hours it drops to like 24k considering the systems down here in
ghana it was pretty ok.

You cant transfer an account between Orange in different countries. Take
out a new contract with Orange France or Bouygues Telecom, and you may as
well get a phone that supports EDGE (eg the Nokia 6230i) at the same time -
itll be subsidised by the network anyway.

If you dont get a new phone, youll need a special data cable to connect
the A62 as a modem as it doesnt support bluetooth. This may be tricky to
obtain and configure - whereas Nokias are fairly straighforward to connect
either with a cable or with bluetooth and youll find lots of help online.

Nowadays there is no reason to dial an ISP. Youll get better speeds using
the mobile phone operators own ISP service via GPRS. With EDGE - which is
an enhancement to GPRS quite prevalent in France - you get data rates of up
to 230 kb/s. Even if you are unlucky enough not to be in an EDGE-enabled
area, youll certainly get 40-odd kb/s on GPRS. It wont be cheap, and you
should choose your tariff carefully.

The first thing to do is find out which network has good coverage in the
area youre moving to in France, and if at all possible, make sure that your
local transmitter supports EDGE. A new phone will have all the settings you
need to connect to the internet straight away, and any local phone shop
should be able to help.

Benedict.

Hi! So, you are saying that Siemens A62 is capable enough for
connecting over EDGE! I just wanted to know what class of service (on
GPRS) will that phone support?

Thanks.
