A heads up and thank you to o2 .......

Further to a recent post highlighting that this old o2 service was ceasing
in May 2006, I contacted o2 Customer Services to try to recover the credit
balance on my two 1999 vintage, extensively travelled but rarely used
Barclaycard freebie Philips phones in the 0771..... number range.

Thankfully I used a freephone number instead of the much publicised 0870 one
as my call lasted 20 minutes.

I must say that the CS Advisor that I spoke to was the most pleasant,
knowledgeable and helpful adviser that I have ever dealt with anywhere.

The balances displayed on my phones were Ł16 on one and Ł14 on the other. I
hoped that I could get both balances transferred to another existing o2 Pay
& Go phone. The CSA got approval from her manager, completed the relevant
forms, forwarded them for processing and said that she would phone me back
in a couple of days when the final balances had been confirmed. I didnt
hold my breath.

To my great surprise she phoned exactly as arranged to say that she had
completed the transactions and the money would be transferred later today.
This has now happened.

BUT even more amazing was the unbelievable amount credited Ł104.

I had always regarded the occasional loyalty and rewards messages that o2
had sent to these mobiles as junk because I could not understand how o2
could possibly give credits to phones that could only be topped up using
Barclaycard - especially as my balances had never changed whatever the
message said so I simply ignored them.

However my cynicism has proved unfounded as these credits were added but
apparently o2s system was unable to adjust my indicated balance.

Over the life of these phones my total top-ups were Ł60 on one and Ł40 on
the other, the last top-up being in August 2000, and my total call charges
(as indicated by my current balance) amounted to Ł70 since August 1999.

So these freebie 49p/min, 12p/text phones proved to be just that - not
really what Barclaycard and o2 intended!

Unbeatable Customer Service - thanks o2!

Fred,

my wife has one of these! Can you point me to where it says the service is
ceasing? Also, what 0800 number did you use?

TIA

Nick,

Saynoto0870 sent me to 0800 9708702, o2 Contracts answered and readily
transferred me to Pay & Go (normally found on 08705 678678).

The Pay & Go advisor confirmed that the service was ceasing because these
old phones arent compatible with the current system.

Heres the original post and reply:

There was a thread on this fairly recently... you can probably find it
using google groups.

Yes. but its more down to how the phone works than the tariff... on
that model and others of a similar age, the Top-up credit is stored
with the phone and the SIM card is tied to the phone and vice versa
(ie sim wont work in another phone, and phone wont take another
sim).
Cant remember the details in the original thread, but if you call O2
customer services they may be able to send you a new SIM for more
modern handsets to allow you to keep your number.

no.

Nick-A, please can you point me at a way to unlock a C12?

I have unlocked many other phones, but also believed these things could
never be made to take a standard SIM.

I know its sad, but I just want to try it!
