I am trying to get advice on the best way to produce a device that can
activate its self , by way of a mobile phone signal.

I trying to design an external device for disabled people , that if
near to a mobile phone can pick up and recieve the same signal that is
making the phone ring and and activate the device into its own process
.

The signal is a frequency signal so , i believe this should be easy to
do ?

Can anyone tell me if this is possible , and also The main world GSM
frequencies .

Im working on the principal of radio type frequencies and gsm signal
working the same - ommiting from transmitter and being picked up by
device antenna .

Please can anyone help me - and explain a way for me to do this .

is it basic electronics or complicated

AFAIK

Nope - I think quite hard. First off you not only need the incoming
frequency for the phone (this is the easy bit), but you need to know that
the signal is for *that* phone - which must be much trickier, as you may
have 100 phones in the house, only one of which is yours (and is ringing).

True. Though you could build a device that would respond to the signal
*emitted* by a mobile when it receives a call. If its insensitive
enough it would respond only to a nearby phone - say 1m or so away - so
would have a limited amount of selectivity. In fact such devices
already exist - for Xmas I was given a very amusing Rudolph the
Red-nosed Reindeer hat for my mobile which has a red nose that flashes
when a nearby mobile receives (or makes) a call. I believe this cost
about Ł5 from a supermarket. Youd have to watch out for spurious
triggers due to location updates, though.

If you are refering to picking up the radio signal from the base
station that informs the phone that there is an incoming call - then
it would be impossible. GSM signals are time division multiplexed so
you could not just pick-up the radio wave you would have to decrypt
the signal and work out what was meant for each phone.

However, you can buy various phone call indicators in phone shops,
etc. for Ł5-Ł10 (such as flashing pens) that pick up the distinctive
signature of any phone activating within a number of metres. You can
hear this signal if you put your mobile phone close to any
electrical device with a speaker (radio, landline phone, etc.) when
its is ringing.

Not impossible , just very, very difficult. The handset/SIM combination
manages it, so it cant be impossible :-)
