Straightforward requirement really: I have a static caravan on the South
Coast and would really like internet access in it - there is wireless in
the owners lounge, but thats a bit of a walk away, only good for
occasional use.

So Im thinking 3G PC Card - or, at a pinch, Bluetooth to a 3G mobile - I
have a work mobile, so could procure a second one for this purpose alone, I
guess, although Id rather go the PC Card route. The best deal Ive seen
seems to be the T-Mobile WebnWalk Pro, but Im really not interested in a
Ł20pm contract for a requirement that might extend to 5 weeks a year and
perhaps 2Gb of download in total. Is anyone offering PAYG 3G that might
suit this requirement yet? Or expected to?

I understand the perception that providers have to recoup the huge sums
they may have wasted on whats turning out to be one of several competitive
technologies for providing everywhere internet, but seems to me there
must be many with a similar requirement to my own: The vast majority of the
time Im either LAN or wireless connected, but occasionally want broadband
access in a place where neither are available. Does anyone look like
theyre acknowledging this kind of need yet? - because I think few people
will be prepared to stomach the current costs of a contract in this
situation....

The only one i now of is T-Mobile PAYG Webs Walk: Ł7.50/MB (ridiculously
expensive) but as soon as youve spent Ł1 of GPRS/3G data in a day, you can
keep surfing for free for the rest of the day. I guess that the T&C prevent
the use of this with a laptop though.

It would be a bit pricey but have you considered the T-Mobile SIM only
deal? This costs Ł7.50/month, includes 50 anytime xnet minutes but
crucially has a minimum term of just a month. You could then at the WnW
Pro Bundle at Ł9.99 a month to this to get 2Gb/month 3G laptop access.

Total cost Ł17.49/month. Not the cheapest in the world but flexible and
cheaper than PAYG for large amounts of data.

Appreciate the lateral thinking - although it doesnt look to me like you
can add WnW to a SIM only contract, only the Business-1 plan. But Im
beginning to be resigned to a provider recognising that there is
residential demand for laptop 3G on a sensibly priced basis and offering
it. I suspect the demand wont appear until the pricing reflects other
broadband provision in the domestic arena though: Most domestic users will
have access to broadband via other means the vast majority of the time and
are probably paying around Ł20pm for near unlimited download. I personally
would baulk at anything much above Ł3 a day for 3G - my usage isnt
essential like a business users is and, if I really need it, Ill go and
find a hotspot, which are all over the place already. At worst, Ill plug
into a phone line.

Im happy to pay for PC card etc myself, so it seems to me the cost of
provision is near zero for the provider - some billing admin and a bit of
data transfer - so there clearly is a model and some level of demand which
would provide easy profit to the first who gets the pricing right. But I
suspect, given the need to wring every last penny out of early adopters,
that it wont happen soon. If anyone knows different, please shout now :-)

Your options with T-Mobile are:

Sim only + wnw pro bundle Ł17.50 per month (using phone as modem).

Data card Ł20 per month.

And, yes, wnw pro bundle can be added to relax, flext, sim only as
well.

OK thanks - probably still too expensive for me, since Id have to buy a
phone too, but at least I know what my options are. Probably wait until
the next caravan season and see what the options are then :-)

Ah well, good to know the options at least as you say! Thanks to Simon
for confirming that it can be added to a variety of plans - I think it
was due to his previous posts that I had actually thought this was the
case and therefore ignored the reference on the T-Mobile page re. only
being able to add to Business-1 - should probably have mentioned that
in my original post though!

Good luck anyway - I agree there must be a market for sensibly priced
PAYG 3G data - given the increased number of people that have a mobile
data-capable device but still want to have a phone it seems silly to
force them to take out a second contract.

Cheers

Alan

Me too. Ive only recently stopped using dial-up all the time, and am
now looking at big cost savings using broadband. Just at this moment
using the saving to pay for a 3G habit looks attractive, except that:

a) I dunno how good coverage is on each vendors network - I live in
Edinburgh, and even adsl was late coming to th part I live in, so
maybe 3G coverage is poor

Id want it to work in other places too...

b) My laptop, like many more modern ones, has no PCMCIA slot in it.
I think I read somewhere that some company has made an adaptor
that plugs into a USB port, but its not cheap. If T-Mobiles
coverage is ok up here, their scheme isnt too expensive, but
I wouldnt be happy having their free 3G card and then having
to buy an expensive adapter to make it work. There might also be
support problems if only a handful of customers did so.

Im assuming that USB-attached 3G adapters will become common
in the next year or two, and prices drop, and then Ill get one.
