Some friends of mine regularly visit the UK for a fortnight
at a time and and were thinking of getting this $50 phone
for their next trip (in a month):

My California-resident brother has used Mobile World for
years for phoning home.

For within the UK he uses a CPW Fresh SIM.

AFAIK he only uses these for voice and text calls. He can
recharge online, and does not appear to have any problems
with credit expiring.

My daughters Orange PAYG phone works in Florida

So, if the above *does* work, then just make a chargeable call every 5.9
months

As an aside, I cant text the usa with my Orange contract phone.
Can any network?

To which US network?
A friend who has to text several different people in the US on different
networks keeps several different UK network Sims,
as no one single UK sim will work to all US networks.

Its a real mess
