Hi,

I want to carry a mobile phone for emergencies only.

I want the cheapest rate for calls on PAYG (In case I use the phone
more often than expected).

I would also like credits that do not expire

I have looked at the following networks, but am having difficulty in
deciding between them.

Virgin
Orange
T- Mobile

Can anone advise on these netwoks

thanks

I have been going through a similar dilemma!

Id suggest writing down what you think your annual usage will be
(minutes) - who will you be calling, will they be in the UK/overseas or a
combination?

Will you be sending any texts?

When youve established your calling/text pattern, then do a price
comparison of the major networks. Dont forget to include other providers
(e.g. Tesco).

For me as a low user its a toss up between Tesco and T mobile (see earlier
thread - I still cant decide).

Hope this helps.

Nigel.

All the above is good advice - but dont forget about www.three.co.uk
They charge a flat 12p/min to landlines and other networks with the
possibility of Net connection options.
If you want to send many texts then, if you have an appropriate
handset (must be able to run Java), then consider using the mobile SMS
application from vyke.co.uk
Although I have no need to use it myself I do know that it worked very
well with my Nokia 6230i. The application can be downloaded from their
site and then loaded up to your phone.

In that case you will want to roam UK networks as you may be
in an area without coverage by a single network.

Try getting say an unlocked Nokia 2310 at a CPW
(Probably on virgin) and also buy a SIM4travel,
or any European sim.
Then you can manually switch to any of the UK networks

Someone should now tell you which sim has the best rates

For the volume of use you are anticipating it really is going to be a
matter of pennies between them.

The one requirement not answered is expiry.

All of the PAYG providers require you to make or receive one call in
either three or six months - you will have to dig into their small print
to ascertain exactly which requires what.

Also, Virgin is on the T-Mobile network, Tesco is on O2.

I dont know if they still offer it, but Virgin certainly used to offer
their PAYG tariff on a direct-debit system, so it was a pay monthly phone
on the PAYG tariff. Since its a pay monthly phone you dont need to
build up a credit balance for it to expire, and I dont know if any get
cut off for lack of use.
