It does indeed say that in one pretty prominent place (I believe actually
saying that three months without top-up and you will be disconnected) and
they used to send texts to that effect after three months without a top-up
(though they didnt actually act on it in my case and Ive not heard of it
actually happening to anyone).
However in the terms and conditions linked from the bottom of the web pages,
which are similar in effect to the paper ones that came with my SIM, it says
that you just loose the texts etc. It then says you have to use the phone
once in six months or risk being cut off. Or something like that. It
doesnt matter because that doesnt seem to be the latest story either. If
you go into the help system or follow the latest news links you get the
following...
If you decide not to top up, you simply need to make or receive 3 calls in
each 90-day period for your SIM card to remain connected. In the event of no
usage over a 9-month period, we reserve the right to disconnect your SIM,
and any credit will be forfeit.
I am not entirely sure how you would get to the end of the 9 month period in
the second sentence without already falling foul of the 90 day one in the
previous sentence. I suppose if they dont count texts as usage they might
be trying to handle a situation where customers just topped up to get the
texts and never made or received calls. But anyway that is three or four
different stories to choose from.
The O2 website is not exactly consistent ;-) If you want more fun look at
the instructions for switching between the two PAYG tariffs. In one place
you text e.g. ONTALK to a number or you are invited to follow a link to do
it online and on that page it mentions you can text TALK ON to the same
number. It also says you can dial another number to do it but if you do you
just get a message telling you to use a freephone number instead. And then
when you do make the change the O2 systems cant cope with you doing it in
the middle of the month and start charging you for texts until you complain
to customer services who will just reset your anniversary date leaving you
to text like fury to make sure you arent out of pocket on the deal :)
