Phone is an old Nokia 3210. It came with a BT Cellnet PAYG Sim card. I bought it
in November 2000. Ive never really used the BT
Cellnet Sim as I used my original Vodafone PAYG Sim instead.

Now Id like to give my Nokia 3210 to my girlfriend and put the BT Cellnet Sim
back in it so she can use it.

It may be my locality but I cant receive a signal, well, not after the initial
turn on of the phone at least. When I turned it on
it displayed BT Cellnet, not O2. I take it this is normal and its doing that
because the Sim is programmed that way.

My question is, will I be wasting my money if I by an O2 top up card and try
and use it?

Thanks for reading my meanderings and helping if you can,

Ken

No, the BT Cellnet thing is programmed into the phone, its just
cosmetic. You are actually on O2, but the phone doesnt know that, all it
knows is the network code (which O2 gives it), which to the phone
corresponds to the name BT Cellnet.

It is still O2, so an O2 top up should work.

Bah! Same old story.... 4 year old phone (well, in another 10 months) and
youre going to give it to your girlfriend.

As I always say, if youd loved her, you would have bought her a new one!

it will work on o2 and with o2 top up cards, the reason it displays bt
cellnet and not o2 is because of the sim, for some reason the sim is
programmed with names for the networks and it cant update the name as
such.

If it bothers you so much ring up o2 and ask them for a new sim card
explain you are having problems with the sim card not functioning
properly and problems locking onto the network with it, can you have a
new sim but keep your number. They will send you a new sim card, when
you receive it ring them back up give them your old sim card number
and your mobile number plus the new sim card number it will take
anything from a minute to a day for your new card to be activated with
your existing mobile number, once activated it will display o2 and not
bt cellnet. I found this out after months of being told to download a
logo which its not (I know this as i have a sony ericsson where
network logos are not accepted but a name is displayed instead).

You will probably find with your existing sim it will display t mobile
as one 2 one when you do a scan for other networks, if this is the
case then im 100% correct in what im saying by saying a new up to date
sim is needed.

Actually its the phones firmware which determines the operator logo,
easy enough to reflash a DCT3 Nokia, last version firmware for a 3210
is v6.00, which may just be late enough for updated O2 operator logo.

Or you can send to Nokias a new logo

i think steve he means the actual text not operators logo, we had this
conversation just over a year ago when i suffered the same problem. I
tried new logos etc and still it said cellnet (or genie cant remember
what it was now) when i got a new sim sent to me by o2 and phoned up
to have my number ported to the new sim it came up instantly with o2
and not cellnet (same phone as what the old sim was in).
